For several years now, I've become obsessed with finding a moose. So much that even my friends and family joke about it. Having grown up in New England, I've heard of plenty of people who see them regularly, but I had never gotten that lucky. The only moose I was able to find was a small female with no antlers years ago. It wasn't until I traveled to Montana that my dream became a reality.
While driving through Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park, I saw all sorts of wildlife including bison, pronghorn, coyote, black bear, and grizzly bear. I didn't have high hopes of seeing a moose given that most of Lamar Valley is wide open and doesn't have a lot of green vegetation that moose like to feed on. I was with my friend at the time and just as I was ready to turn around and head back to the campsite, he mentioned that he'd like to drive a bit further.
After driving a few more minutes down the road, we crossed the state line into Montana. Shortly after we did, I noticed some people pulled over on the side of the road looking at something. When I turned my head, I froze. There were TWO bull moose standing in the field eating vegetation. I immediately pulled the car over. With my hands shaking from excitement, I pulled out my camera and started taking photos and videos. They stayed in the field for about 15 minutes before wandering off across the street into the woods. This truly was an experience of a lifetime! After talking to a local, it was the best moose sighting he'd ever seen. My next goal is to find one of these beautiful animals in my home state of Maine.
