Testing out a New Lens: An Unexpected Surprise...

How it Started

For close to a year I've wanted a new lens for wildlife photography. The lens I was using simply wasn't cutting it anymore. It only went to 300mm and on a full-frame camera, that's not much when trying to photograph wild animals. Although I really wanted to upgrade to something nicer, I set a goal for myself. I can only buy new photography equipment from money that I make from photography. Because of this goal, I set out to get more clients, take more photos, and take my business seriously.

The Big Day

After a few months of taking photography more seriously, I was able to complete my goal and purchase the Sigma 150-600mm. This is the perfect budget wildlife lens for me. Although I hope to monetize wildlife and nature photography in the future, for now it's just a hobby. I went out that very evening after purchasing the lens to test it out. That's where the unexpected happened...

I'll be completely honest. Before that day, I had no idea that the Cedar Waxwing even existed. I was sitting out in one of my favorite birding spots, new lens in hand when I saw this beautiful bird perch on a branch right in front of me (pictured above). I quickly pulled my lens up, focused in, and snapped the shot. This photo and the one below are some of my new favorites! Prints are for sale!

Initial Thoughts on the Sigma 150-600mm

After this amazing encounter, I love my new lens! I never would have been able to get these shots with my cheap old lens. That lens served me well for a couple years, however, this upgrade was much needed and I couldn't be happier! I'm excited for many more photos to come.
